Education and activity: In 1974 he graduated from the Vinnytsya Polytechnic Institute and started the postgraduate studies in the KPI on the specialty “System theory and Control theory” and worked in the department of  professor V.I. Ivanenko. After graduation he had worked in the Institute of Cybernetics of NAS USSR since 1979 till 1996, where he had begun as a junior researcher and accomplished as a head of division. In 1991 after defending the doctoral thesis, headed the Department of the Control System Synthesis in the Institute of Cybernetics of NASU.

Since 1996 V.S. Melnyk had held the chair of Department of Applied Nonlinear Analysis at Institute for Applied System Analysis of NASU and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. In 2000 he was elected the corresponding member of NASU. Since 2002 he had been appointed to the director of the Test Center of the Education Quality Monitoring Institute. Since 2003 – he had been the deputy director of the scientific project of the ESC “IASA”. He had been working as a professor of the Mechanic and Mathematic Department of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (since 1997) and the leading researcher of the Institute of Mathematics of NASU (since 2004).

Scientific activity: V.S. Melnyk was one of the founders of the modern nonlinear analysis theory. The results of his researches are well-known and popular outside Ukraine. He was the author of more than 160 scientific works printed in the prestigious scientific journals, among which there were 8 monographs.

V.S. had been often invited to the international Congresses and Conferences as a plenary lector to the leading scientific institutions of Spain, Italy, Poland, France, USA and other countries.

Education activity: For many years he had been teaching students of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and students of the Mechanic and Mathematic Departments of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, choosing the talented youth paying great attention to its scientific development throughout the postgraduate studies. He prepared 16 PhD of Science and 4 Doctors of Science.

Due to his both high qualification, fidelity to principles, democratic approach and humanity, Valeriy Sergiyovych gained deserved authority and respect among the wide scientific community, colleagues and students.

Hobby: Literature, music, tennis, mountain skiing, tourism.
